Unfortunately osteoporosis runs in my family (on both sides too). Osteoporosis is a bone disease where your bones weaken as you get older. One of the best ways to ward against it is to eat plenty of calcium which is in high amounts in dairy products, and to do weight bearing exercise.
I’m not a big fan of milk itself (I love non-dairy products as you’ve probably picked up from this blog). I do eat cheese, but not enough to get the enough calcium to combat future bone issues. Luckily since I do take part in weight bearing exercise, calcium has always been the focus for me. So, I’ve been taking calcium supplements for a long time now.
My favorite calcium supplement is called Adora. It comes as a very tasty dark chocolate disk (it also comes in milk chocolate which I've never tried) made from all natural, vegetarian, gluten free ingredients. Each disk is only 30 calories (1 weight watchers point), and because of the taste I am much more motivated to remember to eat two every day, much more so than when I take calcium in pill form.
Adora disks contain 25% of vitamin D, 50% of your vitamin K, and 50% of your daily calcium, which is fantastic, and personally speaking makes me feel like I’m getting the calcium I need. Alone, outside of dairy products, calcium is poorly absorbed by the body, so it is important to take it with vitamin D which aids in its absorption.
I buy Adora at Whole Foods. They are also available at Walgreens, GNC and other stores. I also made them available at the Yummy Diet Food Amazon Store. They come in large bags or in smaller packets if you want to try them before you buy a big amount.
Enjoy!

I enjoy the dark chocolate, but my mom really wants a caramel flavored. Can you get them to work on that?
I like chocolate in general, and want to take more calcium. but I'm wondering, is it true that our body can not assimilate well processed vitamins in general?
Are these chewy like Viactiv or more crunchy like regular pieces of chocolate?
Calcium supplement in chocolate. I should get this one for my mom. Thanks for sharing his :)
HangryPants: Caramel flavor sounds good! I don't actually have a contact at the company, but I'm sure you can email them (and if they end up making it we'll all owe you a huge thank you)!
Balance, Joy and Food: I think a good rule of thumb is to get your vitamins/minerals naturally if you can. But if you aren't getting it naturally, supplements can help.
Anonymous: They are like real pieces of chocolate, not chewy like Viactiv.
Thanks for all the great comments! :)
I definitely love chocolate. But I should try dark chocolate instead. Thanks for the suggestion!
Wow. This is great. I love chocolate and it's good to know that there's a chocolate calcium supplement.
these look really tasty. im positive they would beat the chalk flavored ones i eat now.
Thanks for this great post on Adora Calcium. I am the Registered Dietitian / Web site manager / Newsletter Editor for Adora. Although we are a chocolate company - which is why our product does in fact taste like real, premium chocolate - I can run the carmel idea by our product development team. Please check out our Web site for more information. You can even buy Adora online at store.adoracalcium.com. We offer monthly specials and contests through our newsletter www.womensCircleofHealth.com.
