A friend of mine recently sent me a link to a NYT blog entitled: "The 11 Best Foods You Aren't Eating". I thought it would be useful to go through a few of my favorites from the list, and talk about some ideas for adding them with some of the foods I've already blogged about (you can click here to see the post in full, which details the healthy properties of each of the foods listed).
Cinnamon: Add some cinnamon to your low calorie soup, your almond milk (nutmeg works too!), your low calorie cereal, or your tea or coffee.
Pomegranate juice: Pomegranate juice is available on its own or as an ingredient in smoothies that have several fruits in them (Odwalla has a few varieties). You can buy pomegranate juice at Safeway or Whole Foods (Whole Foods sells an unsweetened version). You can also buy pomegranate seeds at Safeway as well, or if you are ambitious, you can buy the fruit and "de-seed" it yourself (note: it can pretty difficult).
Dried plums: Eat them as a snack, a dessert, or sprinkle them on your salad. Unsweetened dried fruits are a favorite snack of mine.
Pumpkin seeds: Can also be eaten as a snack, or added to low calorie soup, low calorie cereal, salad, or oatmeal.
Turmeric: Add a little to your soup, your grilled dishes, or anything else that needs a bit of spice.
Frozen blueberries: Eat them with fage yogurt, with fat-free whipped cream, in your cereal, your smoothies, your oatmeal, or with low calorie lmond milk. I absolutely love eating frozen fruit and frozen bananas for dessert.
These are just a few of my ideas. Would love to hear your ideas on how to eat these items (and the others in the official list) in the comments!
